It’s been a year since the iPhone 3G was launched, so the people that bought the iPhone 3G (with or without an contract) are entitled to get their iPhone unlocked so it can be used with sim cards from other carriers. In many companies is clear how to do this, you call a number, give the IMEI and you wil receive an text that will unlock the iPhone.
Many thanks for the help!

I was under the impression that iPhones sold in France were already unlocked.

The phone company who you took the original contract out with will have the SIM unlock code. But getting it from them can be difficult. Try calling them late at night when less experienced staff are on shift, i did this and after trying for weeks i got my unlock code.

With the iPhone, the easiest way to do this is to jailbreak it! A step to step guide is found here http://www.appleiphonereview.com/iphone-tutorials/iphone-jailbreak/ simply follow the steps here to unlock. Please note however that this will void your warranty it will also allow you to download 3rd party apps and totally change your iPhone interface look. If you damage your phone using this I think restore may prevent apple from knowing about it and so your warranty won’t be voided if its a yr old it may already be void.
